Even Here

Genesis 16:13
“Thou God seest me.”

When we talk about Hagar, we often tell her story as though she was only a victim.

And she was mistreated.

But that isn’t the whole story.

If this story is new to you—Hagar was a servant placed in a situation she didn’t choose. Her master, Sarah, unable to have children, gave Hagar to Abraham in an attempt to bring about God’s promise through human effort. But when Hagar became pregnant, the relationship between her and Sarah fractured, and what followed was a mix of hurt, pride, and conflict that led her to run.

But before she fled, Scripture tells us she “despised” Sarah in her heart.

She reacted.
She was proud.
She was hurt.
She was afraid.

Her story was not clean.

It was complicated.

Pride, fear, survival, reaction—all tangled together.

It is possible to be surrounded by people and still feel unseen—especially when you recognize you’ve played a part in what’s broken.

—You can feel isolated in a relationship and still know you contributed to the distance.
—You can feel misunderstood and still recognize where you pushed someone away.
—You can feel alone in your growth and still carry responsibility for how things unfolded.

And in that tension, it is easy to believe you have forfeited the right to be seen.

But Hagar hadn’t.

God did not reduce her to her reaction or her role—or even her contribution to the conflict. He did not hold her at a distance because her story was messy.

The Bible says, “He found her.”

In the very place she believed she was most alone, He came looking for her—on purpose.

In all of her complexity.
In all of her fear.
In all of her missteps.

She was never lost to Him.

And neither are you.
EVEN. HERE.

— With You Always.
